yes you can do it. you just need to edit .cu file and use the following command.

nvcc filename.cu -o filename

jst let me know if you are getting any error..
Also I would like to say you shoul join online CUDA training program at HBeongpgpu.. I think that would be much fruitful to you...

I have only used cuda2.3 only and i am presently learning that only...
I installed the Visual Studio 2008 then cuda toolkit, then cuda sdk and then Visual Studio Cuda Wizard(Did you install it? If not then try doing that)...since i do not have a GPU so i run the programs that i make on EmuDebug mode in Visual Studio.
Visual Studio crates problems sometimes...
Therefore, i prefer working on linux...You may use any flavour of it.
Fedora or RedHat or Ubuntu even...
